About Kessonga
Kessonga is a Certified Mindfulness & Meditation teacher that first discovered mindfulness when reading the book Full Catastrophe Living by Jon Kabat-Zinn. At the time, he was a licensed acupuncturist with a private practice in Raleigh, NC. Almost immediately after reading the book, he began a personal meditation practice. After practicing for a few years, Kessonga decided he wanted to start teaching mindfulness to his clients. He received training in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) from the Oasis center at the University of Massachusetts, which was led by Jon Kabat-Zinn at the time, the Mindfulness Center at Brown University, and from the Program on Integrative Medicine (PIM) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

After completing his training, Kessonga began teaching both private and group sessions, working with everyone from adult individuals, to corporations, to kids. He also partnered up with a non-profit to help support mental health and well-being in Black men ages 18-45 dealing with issues like substance use recovery and positive HIV-status. A lifelong student, Kessonga returned to graduate school at the UNC Chapel Hill School of Social Work. There, he was selected for a competitive internship at Duke University Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), where he provided therapy for students at Duke University. Upon graduation, he started his own private practice as an outpatient psychotherapist.
These days, Kessonga works full time at his company Mindful Explorations, LLC, (ME) where he hosts mindfulness workshops, seminars, and retreats. Through ME, he also lends his warm, calming voice to various VO projects. In addition, Kessonga lends his expertise to global mental health company Headspace Inc.. As one of the Mindfulness and Meditation teachers on the award winning, internationally acclaimed Headspace app, he serves as one of the voices and faces of Headspace. Kessonga is also currently an adjunct mindfulness instructor at the UNC Chapel Hill School of Medicine, where he teaches mindfulness-based stress reduction and works on research projects funded by the National Institutes of Health. Kessonga’s mission, purpose and passion is to bring mindfulness and meditation to the diverse populations of the world.
